WHEN YOU SAY “Diabetes” you mean, usually, diabetes mellitus or so-called “Sugar Diabetes.”

The other type is rather rare, and is merely a disarrangement of nerve control that expresses as polyuria, or excessive urination, not a disease, but a symptom complex.



Diabetes mellitus is common, and growing all the time more common, so that there has been for fifty years a gradual percentage increase year by year.



The public seems somehow to believe that in insulin we have a means of controlling this disease, but the author of the insulin plan made haste to warn the profession and the public that insulin is not a cure, but a means of meeting the symptom of glycosuria, or the passing of Sugar through the kidneys.



It was formerly believed that there were three distinct types of the disease, supposedly from three different causes, and some authors made four types, and insisted that these be distinguished in diagnosis so that each separate type might have its appropriate form of treatment. Yet all the time no form of treatment made the slightest difference in any type then described—all were considered incurable.



The pathologic picture is one of failure of the islands of Langerhans, situated in the extreme tip of the pancreas, and whatever the seeming difference in type this one thing must be present or we cannot have diabetes mellitus.



The pancreas is an organ with double function, the main part furnishing two of the principal hormones or enzymes of use in intestinal digestion, and emptying by a duct into the duodenum, the last inch of which is common with the bile duct.



This last inch, the common duct, carries both bile and the secretions from the pancreas, the bile being furnished by the liver, of course.



The little tip of the pancreas has no access to the duct, but is separated from the main body of the pancreas by a very thin partition of fibrous raphe and emits its secretion through its own blood supply. Thus this secretion from the Langerhansian end finds its way directly into the general circulation without entering the digestive tract. This tip is well packed with tiny so-called islands, first described by Langerhans, hence bearing his name, the “islands of Langerhans.”



Now why do these tiny little islands decline in function, or finally go entirely out of business? If the rest of the body is well it is out of the question that any influence could interfere with any body function, except through external injury, for disease of no part occurs in any body unless the whole man is out of order, a fact that I wish to emphasize.



After beginning my studies in nutrition, it was hard at first to think of such organic failures as degeneration of the pancreas as due to general body states, but as the rule was applied to this condition that had been found effective in all sorts of toxic states it was soon demonstrated that diabetes mellitus fell under the very same laws as the toxic conditions, hence must also be a toxic state originally. As disappearance of disease notably of toxic character had led me to believe that in intoxication we had a definite cause for such diseases as septicemia, migraine, bilious, acute diseases of all kinds, it was not hard to follow the same line of reasoning in other and seemingly dissimilar conditions, and when such deficiencies as diabetes mellitus, anemia, tuberculosis were treated as intoxications, they also disappeared as did the more patently toxic states.



Among the earlier demonstrations, that on anemia of all kinds was most striking. Here was a plainly deficient condition that seemed to bear no relation to body saturation with toxins, yet when the body was detoxicated, recovery took place just as in septic states.



Diabetes was merely another disease expressing a deficient function, and might it also not be due to the same toxic causes as were so evident in many other conditions?



It took a little courage at first to purge the starving diabetic and cut off his food, but the very first trial of this system was completely convincing. The ravenous hunger and arid thirst both disappeared promptly when the purge was administered for three consecutive days and food limited to the fresh unsweetened fruit juices or to water only.



This period of active detoxication was then followed by a dietetic arrangement that precluded the usual acid formation; the hunger and thirst were never again uncontrollable, and the urinary Sugar disappeared and soon the blood Sugar was down to normal limits.



Again let us remember that the toxic cause is a universal one, being composed of plethoras of certain things and paucity of certain other things, the imbalance accounting for the toxic state. With this fact in mind it is not hard to realize that diabetes occurs in those whose pancreas Is inherently weak, either through heredity or as the result of using too much carbohydrate food of deficient chemistry, such foods as refined starches and sugars in excessive amounts for most of the life of the affected individual.



Referring again to the arrangement of the pancreatic anatomy it is plain that whatever the insulin secreted by these little islands does is performed in the blood and tissues, as there is no connection with the digestive tract.



The duct part of the gland has much to do with converting dextroses or sugars into the primary form, or glucose. In fact this is the chief function of the pancreatic hormones that find their way into the intestinal tract.

As glucose, or some other primary form of sugar, this product of starchy and sugar digestion then is absorbed into the blood stream, but is unusable by the body in this form.



It is the insulin secreted by the tip of the pancreas that completes the conversion in either the blood or the tissues into its final form, glycogen, in which form it furnishes our chief form of fuel for activity.



Now if insulin be deficient in the blood stream, through inactivity of the islands of Langerhans, this conversion is not completed, and much dextrose accumulates in the blood stream.



When this has reached a certain degree of saturation the excess runs off through the kidneys as dextrose, or sugar, and we recognize this existing condition as diabetes mellitus.



It must be evident then that this deficient action of the tip of the pancreas is the direct cause of this form of disease, and when we speak of cure we can mean nothing less than a regeneration of this failing function. Insulin from the pancreas of the sheep will not restore this failing function, but merely acts as a crutch for supplying the missing hormones.



This is on a par with all forms of treatment, aimed at a symptom, but not comprehending the initial cause.



If any function is failing, or if any organ is diseased, the whole system is out of order or this failure could not occur. Therefore you must forget the local degeneration and



clean out the whole man



and stop the intoxication



(yank all bad teeth, ETC., ETC., ETC )



that has over-strained this weak link. Then nothing can prevent return to health, unless the diseased state of the organ has gone so far that regeneration is not to be thought of, which is indeed a late stage.



Not everyone who shows urinary sugar is diabetic, for there is a limit to pancreatic function in everyone and if the intake of carbohydrate is too excessive day after day it is not unlikely that the utmost limit of efficiency of the pancreas is passed and dextrose will accumulate in the blood and appear as sugar in the urine.



If yours is a true case do not be discouraged, but also do not wait until you have reached



a skeleton stage



and the pancreatic function is approaching nil. The ordinary case that has not used insulin is not at all difficult, but if insulin has been continued for several years there is then no way of knowing the present state of the function of this important organ, as undoubtedly the degenerative process has progressed, the evidence being that the dose that is sufficient this year may have to be doubled next year or the next.



Clean house and stop the causes of intoxication and you will have done all that bears any relation to recovery from this all too common and generally misunderstood condition.
