Here's a little note for all you guys. I'm a Dr. and this was NOT covered in Med school!!! I've done some research as I am wondering what the hell was wrong with me too. I've always been VERY clean, never a "dirty hippy" and a foul fecal odor has come upon me as well. I've had G.I. series, all sorts of G.I. tests, scpoes, meds, and mine comes along with vomitting as well.
There are many links on hyperhydrosis and bromohydrosis on the internet, but nothing REALLY covers the fecal/ fetid odor that eminates from every pore & every surface on my body. However, I do sweat a bit & being overweight does not help, people. This is all new to me, in the last 5 years. Being on call 36 hours and in close proximity to patients and co-workers does NOT help matters. I shower about 3-6 x a day depending on how long I am up in a 24 hour period. Other Dr.s make fun of the odor. NOT cool. Not even close to funny, when these people should know about certain syndomes & metabolic states.
I find baths/ showers with deoderant soaps & antibacterial soaps help a bit. Scrubbing in shower & powdering with baking soda helps too. Certain-dri and Drysol may help with the sweating (use as directed), but nothing rids me of the smell of feces. I recently found literature on "Trimethylaminuria" which is called "fish-odor syndrome". It's supposed to be rare but reading these & other loops all over the internet relly shows it is not. There is no cure & it can be inherited. I have read so far Acidophilus, oral Chlorophyllin 60 mg 3 x a day, papaya enzymes, milk thistle, and aloe vera juice helps some people. Changing your diet helps too, I've read legumes, soy, choline (fish, eggs dairy), and lecithin (sweets, powdered coffee creamers) should be avoided. That's great (sarcastic) b/c I was having success on South Beach which has LOTS of protein, eggs, etc. in it. I lost like 40 lbs and still going. However, this protein-rich diet made the smell worse and noticeable all the time to co-workers who have a childish mentallity (isn't that great--heath professionals are social idiots too, my friends).
I hope you find this advice helpful. Check out the above syndrome out on the web. I have not tried any of the oral pills out yet but want to try the chlorophyllin out b/c it is used in some medical preps for wound healing & reduces odor when applied to the wound. The advice above is not meant to cure, prevent, diagnose, or treat any diseases. I just hope it helps you all out (and me). You should find a good Dr. (good luck--I work with all of them & they are socially inept), maybe even a therapist, someone kind & smart. Get checked out for lower & upper G.I. diseases as well. Good luck, God Bless. And hey, like someone on here said, if nothing works, don't get upset or depressed. Life is too short. If they can't take the funk, funk 'em. Don't let "them" ruin your social lives. Get nasty back. :) -Dr. XYZ
