Re: About Ed
Ed's position on the bible has been greatly misunderstood in some of these threads. The word of God is living and active, sharper than a double-edged sword, dividing bone and marrow. He accepts the word of God as accurate and authoritative for the believer's life. What is fallible is man's interpretation of scripture. Therefore you have highly intelligent theologians(and laypersons alike) lining up on both sides of controversial topics for two thousand years, many on both sides completely sure that they are right and the others are false teachers and heretics.
I did not get saved by reading my bible. I got saved by someone sharing the message of salvation with me, and putting my faith in Christ. What Ed is saying is that the bible, while an exceedingly vital tool, cannot supplant your personal relationship with God. Jesus did not limit himself to what was written in what we call the Old Testament, but he was in constant communion with the Father, and said and did what the Father showed him. There are millions of Christians, particularly in underdeveloped countries, that don't know how to read and/or have never owned their own bible. Thank the Lord that he sent us the Holy Spirit!
This is where the Pharisees, Saducees, and Teachers of the Law missed it. They knew the written word (Logos) inside and out, but they ignored what the Spirit was saying (Rhema). Because of this, they missed out on the Messiah. We don't just need natural eyes and minds to read the Logos, we need spiritual ears to hear the Rhema and hearts to obey. It is not a feeling or emotion, it is being led by the Spirit and it is Jesus' model of ministry. This is why from Jesus to John, from Matthew to Revelation, they say "Him who has ears to hear, let him hear..."
