It has been quite interesting reading all the pros and cons of the Mirena. My OB/Gyn and I made the decision today to proceed with the insertion. I am nervous about this as well. However, I am not having this done to prevent pregnancy, but to treat my heavy periods. I'm already taking an antidepressant, so won't worry too much about that. Hopefully I won't have a lot of the side effects described in this forum. I have been on birth control pills in the past and never had a problem with weight gain, mood swings, etc. But I will let you all know how it goes and update on the progress after insertion. I will do anything at this point to prevent those heavy periods. They disrupt my life to the point where I won't go anywhere and even stay home from work. I even send my husband to the store to get my overnight pads. I can't even use tampons or regular pads. Hopefully by the time I have the Mirena removed in 5 years, I will be finished with menopause.
