Re: Mirena IUD and depression?

Hi its me again, 3 months later. You can read my previous post by me (sameasalways about 6 posts above if you want). I have been having tons of problems w/dysfunctional uterine bleeding for the past 4.5 years and in that time I had two IUDs inserted both were Copper T's (the Paraguard). I loved the paraguard but I had extremely heavy period on it that lasted 7 to 8 days where I coudn't even get in the shower w/out leaving a trail. It was the heaviest I've ever had in my life. 3 months ago, I went to the obgyn about spotting and after examining and testing for polyps/fibroids (found none) recommended either the pill or hysterectomy. When I told him I didn't handle the pill well he recommended hysterectomy and had me scheduled for one in two weeks from that appt. It freaked me out. Also I mentioned endometrial ablation and Mirena and he blew me off, treated me like a stupid little kid and told me when I was ready for a hysterectomy to give him a call. Since I had thought he was really nice and young and aware of newest procedures in gyn care this shocked me to no end. After researching extensively for the past 3 months I made a 2nd opinion a month ago on this hysterectomy thing. The new doctor told me about 3 other options that the old one blew me off on. Number one solution: Mirena Number two: the patch/worn consequetively, and number 3) endometrial ablation due to the permanent sterility which results. I was thrilled that everything she said was backed by all the research I had personally done. I had already researched the Mirena. I have tried virtually everything there is avaialbe for contraception (which I don't need anylonger because husband has a vasectomy). I have tried the pill (horrible), depo-provera (wonderful except after 4 months I steadily began to break down emotionally until eventually 6 months after the first shot I coudln't take the 3rd depo shot.I was crying each day for absolutely no reason). I didn't experience amenorhhea from depo but rather my periods came exactly like clockwork/like normal for me (that was 10 year ago prior to spotting problems I have now since the birth of my 2nd son). This is why I refused depo provera which was mentioned as a possiblility (the mood problems and the fact that it seems to not affect my period adversely nor stop my period either). Next I tried the pill again...didn't work. Too many mood problems and lethargy. Then I tried the diphragm. Awsome!!!!!! If you have lots of problems w/hormonal birth control try the dipahgragm. Its not half as bad as doctors try to make it out to be and there is a good support group for it on the yahoo egroups list). I quite using the diaphgragm because two or three times per year I would not put it in when I was supposed to and suffered too much stress worrying about possible pregnancy. I tried the copper T after that. I had very very heavy periods, had it removed after about a year and a half. Now then my husband had a vasectomy. Then 2 years after his vasectomy I still have the spotting problem. I am getting a Mirena inserted in two weeks, when I start my period. I am looking forward to seeing how the Mirena works wiht my body. I hope I don't spot constantly. I am crossing my fingers to be int eh 20 percent that stop having a period altogether. I also suffere from severe pms now since having my 2nd child. It said on the website it helps w/some of the physical signs of pms. I am going into this knowing all the pro's and cons and hoping it works and willing to give it a 6 month to 12 month try. The only thing that would cause me to stop using it is if I got severely mentally ill from it (I'm already on Serzone for anxiety and PMD). Also, if I spotted every single day for 4 to 5 months w/no signs of slowing I would consider removing it at the 6 month period but I am willing to try it for a year as even w/the Paraguard you have the possibility of spotting the first year. ( never had spotting w/the paraguard but it doesn't have levenorgestral like Mirena, even though spotting and heavy periods are hte classic side effects from Paraguard). So everyone I will let youknow how this works and give you an update in about 3 months okay? Take care and good luck......if you are like me and have tried lots of different birth controls and are considering Mirena as alast resort I would definitly recommend you try it. After all you can always have it taken out and the amount of progesterone it releases is very small (the equivilent to taking 3 mini pills a week) (mini pills are the progesterone only pill, at a very small dose , used by breastfeeding mothers).
