our patients do not swallow chunks of mercury at all. i have watched many removals and mercury pieces are not swallowed. for one, we cut the fillings in 4 pieces. we also use a high powered vacuum, air filters, rubber dam, etc.... there will always be mercury vapor in the air and some residue, as it cannot be avoided, but no one is swallowing pieces of mercury.
