Steve, I'm sad to say that in Africa its still a big business to kill the elephants for their tusks.  There are people who try to protect them but there are still those that get killed today by poachers.  I saw a documentary on elephants where the crew followed a group of them for years.  They are very social beings, when a member of their group are killed the parent or child of the one who was killed stays with them for many days.  This documentary took several years to shoot, the crew had come upon a group just after of of them had been killed, they followed and filmed this group for over a year and a half, the elephants came upon the bones of the one that was killed and she didn't want to leave the bones, they had remembered their family member.  It was so sad to watch.

Yes, it would be too scary for words if an elephant painted a picture of someone shooting one of them.  I was shocked to see the video you posted of the elephant painting an elephant, how amazing is that?  The painting I have that an elephant did is an abstract not a picture of something, but its still very cool.
