Great point, Ev. Younger children can do only an hour a two a day. Then as they get older, move up to 3 and then 4 hours (and as they get older, more of it can be self-taught study, too). The law only required us to do 4 hours a day, I’m not sure about other places. Hi there! I think you are are being paranoid. I have 4 children ranging in age from 23-2 1/2 they all developed speech at different times. Two year olds’ with only a few words is normal. Another thing to think about is that in a traditional school they are there for 6 hours. Only about 3 of those hours the children are actually learning. When homeschooling, once you have your plan and curriculum you will find that school will not take more than half a day. Many, many home schoolers that I know are done by 12 noon or 1pm.   [End]

Some answers, maybe.... First of all, I’m not familiar with Steiner, but there are many approaches to homeschooling or unschooling. I personally plan to use a combination of different things. There are video curriculums that basically allow the child to teach himself and all you need to do is administer the tests and check the scores. There is a huge ”ring” of homeschoolers in my area - and by golly gee, the kids are smart, socialable, mannerly and excel in all areas when compared to the public school kids. Thanks! I’m just finding that as I’m preparing to homeschool, and gathering information. People are asking me: ”So, is ”young lad” going to school this fall” ”What grade is ”young lad” in?” When I calmly but surely say, I’m homeschooling. I tried for a couple of years to home school my daughter. I got tons of information, contacted organizations and got materials. However as I tried and tried, I found that she was not learning from me because although she is very bright she has certain learning disabilities that I was unable to tap into. For me personally, the only response that most people can’t argue with is that God has led me to do it (this is true for me). Anything else they’ll argue with. Of course they still come up with ”aren’t you concerned about their social skills? I know so-and-so who homeschools and their children are social idiots”. Hi Ev, Homeschooling can be controversial. I work in the public school setting, and have thought about this a lot. We attend church where many, if not all, of the families homeschool. The families are quite large and, of course, the moms do not work outside the home. We have other friends in other denominations that home school as well. But just look up the statistics on the results of home schooling and scholastic achievement. The points scored for home schoolers are much higher on a national average than public or privatedly schooled children. Some of the best years of my life. It is important to find groups that you kids can participate in and be social. My brother and I kept eachother company, but we also had boy scouts, a local group of homeschoolers that got together 3 days a week for PE (2 days) and group classes on Fridays, swim team, and the like. Homeschooling was a much more efficient way to learn, even more efficient than high school, but there are other things to be considered when you get to that level. I think it is important to get back into the normal swing of things at high school. Also, the knowledge level needed to teach through high school is much higher than I think most parents can provide. Some Practical Advice for New Homeschoolers. Homeschool dot com you don’t *have* to buy the kit to learn a lot to get started. Books 4 Home School. Eclectic Homeschool Online, not exactly my style, but good information none the less. Home Education magazine lots of good articles. Definitely, check with your state laws on homeschooling. Legal requirements differ very widely from state to state. Don’t rely on the Board of Education to tell you the full law. Yes, as grog said, the internet is the best place to find your resources. Also, there are many Christian programs for homeschooling where you can receive all the materials you need including some wonderful videos and teaching tools. It may not be the same in Canada as in the states. Here you need to register and each state has it’s own rules and requirements. As soon as you start researching you will come up with these tings.
