My only guess is to leave it alone for a day or two...no more than three.
My experience (with boils) tells me that you may just be going after it too soon.
The hardness, as far as I know, may just be the 'core', after a while the body builds up pus under it so that the core is loosened and pushed out, usually quite suddenly, in the course of your normal movements.
(I could tell you a couple of stories I heard as a child, but they are gross.)
You'll probably know if the infection is affecting your whole system. I think you'd likely feel fever, etc. That's when you get to Emergency in a hurry!
Ask the doctor for the 'old-fashioned' treatment...warm packs, and patience...with a watchful eye.
The body is a marvelous healer.
So glad the clay poultices help. Did they lessen the pain at all? I hope so!
