Re: Going to heaven when we die.
Well when I say that we trust God even with the good works after salvation, I don't mean we don't do anything, or put forth any effort. I just mean that we trust that it's ultimately all His grace that we will do anything good, and it brings comfort knowing that, to me at least. If our trust is in Him, then we will walk in those good works that he prepared for us to walk in. Paul said that he worked harder than anyone (he did a ton of good works and He put out great effort) but it was all by the grace of God working in him he said. So all I'm saying is that we just need to trust that not only does God securely save us by grace alone, but by grace he does all the rest too, if our trust is in Him.
God has his ways of ultimately getting us to do His will. He disciplines his children. The Holy Spirit convincts us of our sins. But all of salvation from the beginning until the end is by His grace.
I agree that being closer to God brings rewards in this life for sure, not so much in a health/wealth sense at all, but in all kinds of other ways, more peace, joy, etc. But even being closer to God I see as His grace working in us. If we could of ourselves be better than others, we'd have a reason to boast, but when it's all grace, how can we boast? If Paul had said he worked harder than anyone and then left it at that, well we could say Paul was boasting about himself, but he gave the credit to God. Paul wasn't better than the rest, he even said himself he was the chief of sinners, but God prepared the work beforehand that he wanted Him to do, and so that is what he did.
Gal. 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, 16to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles...
Hopefully that clarifies what I was saying a little better, although maybe not. :) I know this subject can get complicated.
