I was having a lot of unwanted side affects as a result of the mirena and had no insurance. I was warned not to take it out myself. But it was a pointless warning.

My husband actually pulled it out. Grabbed it by the strings. It came out easily. Didn't hurt. I wrapped it in tissue and threw it in the garbage.
It took me about 6-7 or so months to get back to myself "mentally". And am glad we did it.
