...In an Emergency...

...When you feel angry; disappointed; like you'll never get anywhere, emotionally, in your whole life...

...And there's no friend in sight you can talk to, rant to; help that ache in the pit of your stomach by...

...Roll up an old newspaper...and beat it up on the kitchen counter! (That's the only piece of furniture you have that is strong enough to take it.)

Shout! Really put on an act!

Three whacks and you start laughing! ...You may even feel silly.

Then, take a nice comfortable bath.

The whacking cuts through the feeling, and the bath comforts and redirects your energies.

No, you haven't figured out how to solve your problems, but you have given yourself room to think straight, clearer.

But, don't think about your obstacle...have a nap, or go on to the next task, or be social, or go for a walk.

Your 'problem' will wait for you. Maybe you'll get a hint, later.

Redirecting your focus is more than a 'stall'.

...1. It puts you immediately 'in charge' of you.

...2. It makes room for possible solutions, whenever they appear.

...3. It slams the window where the uglies are getting in!!!

(We ALWAYS get MORE of what we think about! So, QUICK, grab onto something different, something you like, something beautiful, uplifting...even if it is just a picture you keep handy for the purpose, but one unrelated to your 'problem'. Favorite beautiful words can help, too.)

There are lots of things you can do to cut right through feelings you don't like.

Punch an old pillow, for example, or go straight to a bath and a nap...or prepare something nice for someone you love...even just think about it.

However, NEVER DO THE EXERCISE IN FRONT OF CHILDREN!!! And, probably not in front of consenting adults, either.

It is just an exercise, for your own benefit...and you wouldn't want to expose your darkest feelings to anyone. They remember too well, when you have gone on to much better feelings.

Children CAN'T understand...and adults probably don't want to...unless they are nosy.

Being in charge of your own thoughts and feelings, feels great.

F.
