David, thanks for the thoughtful replies, but the argument that fruit and veg won't build muscles has been debunked many many times and is now moot with the many vegan body builders out there.
Many are living this diet and are body builders, athletes, full time mothers, doctors, etc. you name it...every walk of life.
The diet is systemic and must be done in conjunction with other lifestyle changes, or it will not work and the diet will be blamed for the "lack of meat", etc.
I am referring to The 80-10-10 Diet that is followed by many muscular fit people, even body builders, semi and pro athletes.
After I was on 80 10 10 for a year, I lost 40 lbs of fat and became a fitness instructor at the age of 40. I was fitter than any other time in my life, very muscular, which I had never been before.

Here's an interview with vegan athlete Rich Roll and UFC Fighter Mac Danzig who is vegan and now 80 10 10, very interesting he talks about inflammation and breathing and how 80 10 10 totally dissolves it like nothing else, this has been my exact experience as well. If I eat cooked foods, no matter what they are, I can't breath.
