Re: Does Anyone Have Dentinogenesis Imperfecta?

I stumbled across this discussion today. I am British and can trace the condition back to my grandmother. My 3 children also have inherited it ( how unlucky is that - 3 out of 3), but in varying severity.
I had full dental clearance at 16, following 5 years of crowns ( they kept falling off - quel suprise) followed by a fixed bridge to the lower jaw (with 8 implants and a bone graft), when I was 34. I have relatively few problems.

All my work has been carried out by consultants (maxillofacial and restorative), as a general dentist is deemed not to have the necessary skills in performing and treating DI patients.

When I had my first child, I knew that there was a 50% chance that he would inherit the disorder, and this was obvious when the teeth erupted. Despite a low sugar, pH neutral diet, the enamel sloughed off, and thankfully this coincided with a move to Scotland, and incredible health care. At first the children (by now I had 2 and one on the way), were seen by a community dental officer, and we had the floride paints, then referral to Edinburgh, to a paediatric consultant, who happened to be the dental advisor to the Brittle Bone Society. It was here that a strategy for the conservation and cosmetic enhancement was begun. My daughters( now 21 and 19), had veneers at the age of 11(ish), These were transforming, gone was the yellow tooth smile. Since then, they have move to the adults department and are seen still in specialist departments at the dental schools/
My 23 yr old son has just had 4 implants and my eldest daughter has got 2 implants. The youngest daughter ( we are off to the dental hospital again in Dundee tomorrow) is undergoing cosmetic work, with special veneers which will lengthen the tooth.

Any questions , please ask

Diane
