Actually, I could have stated my answer much better.  Much land is really not suitable for growing crops - due to climate, grade or other considerations.  Where the waste comes in is man-made meat raising operations that takes soil and water that could be better utilized by plants.  That still leaves lots of grazing land for meat animals. 

India has a lot of problems besides being veggie oriented, though I agree that they would likely be healthier if they did not have the taboos and orientation against eating more healthy meat.

FYI, I personally am a meat-eater and do not consider it nobler to eat plants than animals, though for myself and most others I think that a diet that contains more healthy plants than healthy meats is best.
