First post here. The following is pretty long but please read through it as it may save my brother’s life! (He had a suicide attempt last year and is again suicidal due to the gut symptoms).

His problems started 12 years ago with chronic constipation. He did everything imaginable to no avail. 5 years later he developed anxiety/panic disorder. We finally found the “nutritional medicine” route earlier this year.

His current chronic symptoms are:

Gut: Constipation / extreme painfull heaviness after small amounts of food...this is the most severe symptom! It literally is preventing him from eating!

Brain: Anxiety, panic disorder / extreme racing mind / jumbled thoughts / foggy brain / no concentration / poor memory (this could be from past ECT treatment)

Body: chronic fatigue (very debilitating!!) / headaches that radiates to the face / shortness of breath (no asthma).

Inflammation: plantar fasciitis in both feet / epididimytis / mid-thoracic / acne.

The following has been revealed:

- Fecal microbial analysis (CDSA): Dysbiosis - strep and clostridium overgrowth / no e.coli / no lacto / low concentration of bifido. No candida.

- 3 day stool parasitology: showed no parasites (inc. B.hominis and D.Fragilis).

- Functional liver detox profile: phase 2 detox is sluggish (this showed up on liver detox profile and live blood analysis)

- Hair mineral analysis: high copper and selenium / low iron / low chromium and vanadium. (does this combination indicate any specific problems? someone mentioned liver?)

- Live blood analysis/clot retraction test: Leaky gut / liver problems / protein mal-digestion. (The pathologist was very adamant that the liver should be fixed as it showed up as very sluggish)

- Organic Acids: confirmed intestinal dysbiosis and also amino acid mal-absorption.

- Endoscopy (March 09): No H.Pylori. Minor dyspepsia. This may have changed as he was prescribed NSAID's for 6 weeks and then went on to hydrocloric acid for 4 months straight after, could this combination have caused much more damage to stomach/duodenum??

- Standard bloods are all within range. His low iodine and vitamin D have been supplemented and are okay.

- Haven’t done the adrenal stress test yet.

Treatment so far:

- 3 rounds of Erythromycin antibiotic for strep overgrowth / probiotics to restore good bacteria (Customprobiotics 4 strain D-lactate free) / e.coli strain to colonise e.coli in gut / alkalii drink to alkalise the gut.

- Liver detox to commence only once eating increases! The eating is the biggest hurdle at the moment!!!

- Amino acid therapy for brain problems.

The amino acids have eased the anxiety somewhat but after 2 months, results a quite limited, so I assume the brain problems are coming from gut/liver.

* Here is what has been happening since May 09 (this is when the eating deteriorated due to painful heaviness):

1. He frequently experiences the fullness before any food has entered his stomach. Every morning despite a good bowel movement, he feels this fullness that prevents him from eating breakfast altogether, or having a very small amount e.g. half a banana.

2. After eating, instead of the fullness reducing as the stomach empties, the fullness actually grows steadily, over 30 minutes to 3 hours.

As an example: He had a glass of veg/fruit juice and got very painful heaviness for hours.

3. He never gets belching or reflux, so stomach emptying is probably not be the issue.

The particular thing is that he felt a lot better while on the anti-biotic and once finished, this strange fullness returned. He keeps telling me that he feels like he is deteriorating! He can’t even have fluids anymore without getting this pain afterwards, which is really scary!

We are trying to arrange another endoscopy and hydrogen breath test for SIBO to rule those out.

If anyone has information on what may be causing this painful fullness (stomach inflammation/ulcer, liver/gallbladder problems? Etc) please post here. I would be forever grateful!

Update of symptom I forgot about: he has had a white coated tongue for many years. He has to brush the coating off everyday. Also recently had dental problems, caveties came out of nowhere. The dentist was useless, just filled them up but couldn't help with the cause etc.
