Yes, that is the passage. Thank you for posting it. Paul was correcting disorder in church which we see today as well. People are speaking in tongues before a group of people and it was not being interpreted. He was telling them there must be an interpreter so that all can benefit. There is a gift of interpretation that is given as God chooses. In other words, when someone gives a message in tongues for interpretation someone needs to interpret. Most of the time this is by someone getting the interpretation supernaturally by the Holy Spirit, although sometimes there is someone in the crowd who understands the supernatural language. I have heard testimonies of this happening many times. The person who understands the language in the natural has verified that the person getting the interpretation supernaturally is giving the interpretation correctly. I have never operated in the gift of interpretation, but I know people well who have and I know they are not fakes. The closest to me would be a relative and a dear friend and college roommate.

Praying in prayer language tongues is not wasting the time of the person doing it because the Bible does say that they are being edified. The others are not. This is another reason I believe in private prayer language tongues and I believe this is what Paul was referring to when he said that he prayed in tongues more than them all. I don't think people are deceived into thinking that the people doing it are really holy or something. Some of the people doing it may be deceiving themselves into thinking they are really holy or something which is a sign of spiritual immaturity. The act of praying in tongues is no proof of such things. I do believe some people puff themselves up with speaking in tongues and displaying gifts in front of others. I also believe that there are many people who pray in tongues and operate in the gifts of the Spirit who are very humble and find it disgusting when they see people puffing themselves up with it.

Some people claim that they can sometimes interpret their prayer language tongue. The Bible tells us to pray that we can interpret. I am getting convicted now because I do not pray for this gift and the others as I should. Shame on me. I feel so spiritually lazy at times. Thanks for quoting the scripture so the Lord could speak to me through it.

I do interpret the verses differently than you do. I believe in prayer language as well as messages from God in tongues. I am putting observation and experience together with the scripture in order to understand the scripture. I know sometimes the Lord has woke me up at night to pray in tongues. The Lord had a burden that He wanted me to pray about. I had no idea what I was praying about, but feel confident it was something very important to the Lord. I am ashamed to say that He has woke me up at times with a call to prayer and I decided that I was too tired to obey Him and went back to sleep. "Father God, please forgive me. After all You have done for me, dear God, I can't even obey you in prayer when You call. Please change me and make me into he person You want me to be." Tweet
