Re: The Sinners Prayer: Does it Save You?
Again, sorry for not checking back sooner to see if anyone else had responded. I'll make sure to remember to stop back sooner next time.
I read through about half of your conversation. Without belaboring this topic further I'll just say that while interesting points were brought up on a each side, Vektek and I are like minded on this subject.
Refreshed brought up a great point early on, RE: not actually saying the sinners prayer or repeating any prayer but finding salvation. I believe the "sinners prayer", much like Vektek described throughout, is foreign to the Bible.
Refreshed, in regard to what you asked me very early on when I said: "I was the guy who thought exactly like you and I had no issue with it." The "it" I was referring to was this false belief in thinking that just because I repeated a few words that it meant I was "saved". You had said that you didn't believe we had to understand why we were saying this prayer or that we even had to agree with it for the prayer to be effective. But again, I think like Vektek on this issue, so no point to repeat what's already been said.
Also, I wanted to note that it looked like the subject of predestination came up as well regarding whether God chooses who is and who is not saved. To me, that's one of the mysteries of God. The Bible does say that God makes "some vessels unto honor and some unto dishonor". It also says that God "hardens hearts and softens others". Many places in the Bible it talks about how God is the one responsible for many things, not man, however today for some reason we think that those same things are somehow within our free will to choose. But, that opens up a new can of worms entirely where I think we would never be able to reach a conclusion.
I don't want to sound authoritative on the subject however I thought that it was interesting that it came up in your conversation.
Anyway, good dialogue throughout.
