My whole foods actually started selling local 100% grass fed chicken eggs - they have pics of their farm and will let you tour and everything. This is purely due to local consumer demand.
Eating raw eggs is something I've been doing for 8 years... used to do it with regular store bought organic eggs with good results BUT I did not have a compromised immune system. The thing with store bought eggs is you just don't know how old they are (at least a month, they use a Julian date so consumers won't see it and say WTF??) or the condition of the bird when it layed the egg. Any sickness will be in the eggs. Do you live in the US? Even most cities allow for a few hens. Or you can have them shipped. Backyard is just simpler for me. If I can't tour the farm and assure myself of quality and that the animals are on pasture and are "pets", I won't buy it. It's a moral issue with me... but not saying clean safe products can't be bought.
I live in Texas so I know everyone does not have this luxury.
