Re: Choice
"I myself have experienced states of extreme hunger, where days would pass without a proper meal, and though my body consumed its own muscle mass, I still chose to omit meat product from my diet, though it was plentiful at the time.
It all comes down to choice, whether or not it is viewed spiritually.
And perhaps, turiya, I certainly wouldn't want my dog around you if you were experiencing an extreme state of hunger ;)"
I heard people say that they would rather die from hunger than eat meat. They say this knowing that the situation is never likely to arise. I wonder how any of us would act under starvation conditions, not just a few hungry days (I had many of these as a student), but no food at all for an extended period of time.
I have many members of my family that were held in the death camps during the holocaust, most died of a combination of excessive work and starvation. My Uncle survived and told me stories about eating rats raw, because they were literally starving, he has a real fondness for rats now, because he is gratefull that they gave up there lives so that he might survive.
Again, it is the intention that counts not the act.
