Choice
I once used to live in the very, very rural, very heavily populated streets of a major city downtown.
I have seen large volumes of human beings, homeless and absolutely crippled with hunger, their bodies painfully twisted and distorted from malnutrition with leash in hand, a dog on the other end.
When given food, they would first feed a portion to the dog
(first!!) then they themselves would consume the rest, usually less than what the dog was fed.
When one gentleman was confronted why he just not eat the dog as the gentleman in question was in such an intense state of hunger, the man immediately snapped, "Because a dog is man's best friend!"
I myself have experienced states of extreme hunger, where days would pass without a proper meal, and though my body consumed its own muscle mass, I still chose to omit meat product from my diet, though it was plentiful at the time.
It all comes down to choice, whether or not it is viewed spiritually.
And perhaps, turiya, I certainly wouldn't want my dog around you if you were experiencing an extreme state of hunger ;)
