That sounds like, correct me if I'm wrong, the Arian philosophy. Actually, this belief is quite old - dating back to the Emperor Constantine. The Council of Nicea, because of this sect, first put out the doctrine of the Triune. Essentially, this states that Jesus was separate so that he could be tortured, be crucified, and otherwise experience it as a man. I'm typing from memory, so I might be cloudy on it just a bit.
But what I do know is that the Catholic Church spent considerable energy trying to exterminate this particular sect and were quite successful, depending on your viewpoint of successful.
