I think you may be confusing Traditional Catholicism with the so-called Goddess Movement within the general field of the New Age Movement. Traditional Catholicism never worshipped Mary.
There was a heresy in Arabia during the years AD 350-450 called COLLYRIDIANISM. They went beyond veneration of Our Blessed Mother into outright worship, and so were kicked out of the Church. The major opponent of this heresy was the bishop Epiphanius of Salamis.
