Re: Is it possible to stop degenerative disc disease?
Hi marvellous,
If anything I have to say helps you in any way, I would like you to thank Tony for asking me to respond to your post, and thank yourself for successfully, to one degree or another, helping yourself to get well... the bottom line here is what you choose to do for yourself.
>>"Is it possible to stop degenerative disc disease and reverse it with natural treatments or any other treatments?"<<
Yes, I believe so... When I started out here, I had two very bad knees and a bad back among other things.
You are welcome to read my posting history... the rated posts may speed things up, however, IMO, there are helpful posts that have remained unrated too.
It should be possible to reverse it too and repair the damage... of course your results will depend upon many things, including your age, current state of health, and attitude.
First... honestly assess your diet. Be brutally honest with yourself, and make special note of bad habits - such as if you drink too much coffee, use too much sugar, etc.
Get rid of ALL processed foods, *fake* (sugar and fat substitutes, etc.), and refined food products such as most cooking oils and sugars.
Minimize, or preferably, eliminate sugar in all its forms initially until you start to feel better... instead, eat whole foods only.
Minimize, or preferably eliminate the processed fats and oils; limit your fats to raw, whole food fats and oils... olive oil and coconut being some of the best oils IMO. I use a cultured dairy butter from pastured cows or goats as well.
I also use animal fats like tallow, lard, and suet.
The fat and oil is extremely important... they contain, to one degree or another, dependent upon their quality, fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, K. They are also precursors to many things such as hormones in your body... so I cannot emphasis enough the quality end of things.
Fats and oils are also required in order to utilize minerals to their full potentials.
The sugars, fats, and oils are the easy part for most who already prepare their own meals because all we are dong is replacing the garbage with high quality real, whole foods.
Replace your commercially grown produce with small, local, CNG, biodynamic, or organic growers foods. You may be able to find a food share that does this in your home town.
If you cannot afford to go 100% organic, I would download and use the produce guide from organic consumers... it will list, if I remember right, 100 produce items from most to least contaminated as far as chemicals are concerned. It could be a great help.
If you use dairy... choose raw dairy if you can get it in your state... if not, choose organic without question and non-homogenized. Homogenization renders the fats in milk harmful, when they are extremely beneficial before the process.
Pasteurization is also a nutrient robbing practice of dairy.
Eggs should be free range and organic...
Meats, same thing... free range AND organic.
The more you can get locally, and\or grow\raise yourself, the better off you will be.
These later suggestions can be tough for some... and this all requires you to think ahead, and plan your meals... prepare them from scratch, eat them, and then clean up... which can increase your time in the kitchen considerably. I can easily spend 2 - 3 hours a day in the kitchen.
I do not want to hear any whining about this as I have from some women (surprisingly, never the men - perhaps their women do it for them?)... your health is far too important not to make changes.
I would research spices that are anti-inflammatory, turmeric comes to mind for me... it works great. However, there are many others.
Also look into anti-inflammatory foods.
Supplement wise, I would choose to take a real good quality green food drink... I will not lie, the best ones do not taste very good to the newbee... however, it can be one of the best things you can do, especially if you cannot, or will not (why not?) do all of the dietary suggestions for some reason or another.
I like Health Force Nutritionals Vitamineralgreen. Dr. Ben Kim also sells it under his label in the U.S. and has some of the best prices, unless you can find a local discount health food store that carries it.
There are others I like... but this one is the most complete product IMO.
If you choose that route, another good add as far as a supplement is concerned is a good nutritional yeast... and\or a brewers yeast. I like Red Star for the nutritional yeast, and Lewis Labs for the Brewers yeast.
I found my greatest, and most consitent healing with the ML protocol that also used other things such as lemons, apple cider vinegar, kelp (seaweeds), and black strap molasses.
Far too much to list here, however, that is plenty for you to think about, research, and plan for now... and all of the suggestions are simply whole, unprocessed foods.
Some other things I did were a bit more controversial, however, I still do them, along with those things listed here.
If you wish, you can PM me anytime with questions. I cannot guarantee that I will reply within a day or four (or more in some cases), however, I will get to it eventually.
Take mineral baths - I took up to 4 a week at one time... now about 1 - 2 a week, if that... a simple bath with 1 - 2 cups of Epsom Salts and a quart or two of 3% H2O2 would be great. You can try a half cup of baking soda in there once you get used to the Epsom salt and H2O2 alone and see how that works.
Other things to do immediately... exercise as tolerated, even if it is just a daily walk or bike ride, an hour or so of sunshine most days (during the walk, on a porch, etc.), or in the absence of this, an occasional full spectrum tanning bed. Family, friends, and a good attitude.
Be sure NOT to overdo the exercise. If you are compulsive, and over do it, you will get hurt and quit. Take it slow... as tolerated.
Our lives are about relationships... with people, our faith, and environment.
I have been doing this... 6+ years now I believe... and about when I started all of this, I had just had a consult for knee replacements... that never happened.
I fired my doctors instead... and took responsibility for, and control of my own life, and health.
I think that some people have had some success with pain and discomfort remediation with inversion tables and such... perhaps Tony may elaborate on that.
My best,
