Moreless forgot to point out that these oxide minerals are also caustic due to their very high pH. Magnesium oxide for example reacts with water to form magnesium hydroxide, commonly known as Milk of Magnesia. The reason Milk of Magnesia is used as a laxative is because the hydroxide chemically burns the intestinal wall leading to a influx of water in to the intestines and increased peristalsis. Of course regular burning of the intestinal wall leads to a greatly increased risk of cancer. We see the same thing from bile burns to the intestinal wall after people have had their gallbladders removed. Calcium oxide (burnt lime) forms calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) when in comes in to contact with water. They are used in making cement. Again, lime is highly caustic, which is why the bags have warnings against having the oxide/hydroxide coming in to contact with the skin.

Hydroxides (OH) are extremely damaging free radical molecules. Other examples include potassium hydroxide, commonly sold as Drano, and sodium hydroxide, commonly sold as Red Devil Lye. Ingesting hydroxides is just asking for trouble.
