I too am surrounded. My parents are advanced degree people (my Dad - 5 Masters, one PHD - physicist) - Three friends with PHD's in science, best friend is an OB/GYN....

All of them think I'm wacked. My father is just bemused. I tried to get my Mom to take some probiotics after a dentist killed all her flora with a broad spectrum antibiotic, and she came down with Colitis, for which they had prescribed a parasite drug before they knew and then gave her more Antibiotics ....jeesh. I bought her the best Probiotics known to man, but not one was taken because her doctor did not prescribe it.

I can't even have discussions about what I'm doing with my best friend, the doctor....ah, but she has been reading about Iodine after I sent her about 30 allopathic web postings.

Having degrees are the very definition of someone who has managed very well in "the box". I think that memorizing, as much or moreso as critical thinking is at play here.
