Re: This study proves my point! (edit)
here's the thing, I don't have a doctorate in biochemistry, and I don't pretend to be an expert on how all of these things work on a molecular level
Therefore I simply can't comment about Dr. Haley's assertions regarding the structure of the ALA molecule and how it might react with Mercury
However, I do know how to search the scientific database, and I do know how to decipher the scientific language used in the studies. In other words, I can uncover the studies, I can read the studies, understand what they set out to accomplish, and understand the conclusions they reached
The scientific studies I have read show over and over that ALA has a therapeutic effect against mercury toxicity. It's really that simple.
What I would like to ask Dr. Hailey is this - if ALA cannot chelate mercury, then why does every single study show that ALA supplementation reverses the damage done by mercury?
Now in reality there are other explanations. For instance it's known that ALA increases both intracellular and extracellular glutathione. And it just so happens that glutathione is what your body uses to eliminate heavy metals, including mercury.
So it's possible that ALA's action against mercury toxicity isn't directly related to its ability to chelate mercury, but more related to its ability to increase glutathione
but that's just a theory, I don't really know
