Re: Agree AND Disagree - Re: The basic CURE for depression!

I don't want to advertise the other forum here but here is an extract of a post by a medical doctor who replied to a post in which I mentioned getting relief from Depression symptoms at the beginning of a recent fast:

"do bear in mind that during a fast, as soon as the blood Sugar starts dropping, your endocrine system foes full out to increase the Sugar again. To this end it releases cortizone from the adrenal gland, as well as adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, serotonin and growth hormone. These all helps increase the blood Sugar again but they are all andidepressant also. Most (good) antidepressant drugs as well as electroconvulsive (shock) therapy does exactly that, except they don't affect as many neurotransmitters as does fasting. We are very happy if drugs starts lifting a Depression within 3 weeks, daily shock treatment in 10 days, but I've not come across a Depression outlasting a 4 day fast.. they normally lift on day 2-3. Of course there are complicating factors in most instances but at least the electrochemical component of depression is alleviated."

My depression is definitely not just chemical, it is more of a cosmic angst, a concern or disgust for the state of the world. But the chemical aspect is evident especially when outside stresses start piling on top of me. So being rid of that side of the depression is a great relief and can make a huge difference to how well I can function in day to day life.

I do applaud your doctor though. In spite of his ignorance he is obviously open minded enough to have discovered that fasting is not inherently dangerous and may even know it is good for you, he just doesn't believe it can help your depression. But that's okay, you don't need his belief for the fast to work. :)

I read something recently also which may answer your last question somewhat. Modern medicine isn't the study of wellness, it is the study of disease. When you go to a doctor they want to diagnose and treat your disease. They don't want to make you well in the whole body sense of the word, that's not what they are trained to do. This leads to all sorts of obvious problems, one of the main ones being the sacrifices to the rest of the body they are prepared to make in repairing any one section of it. A totally flawed system. Will they ever wake up to their folly?

Andrew.
