Sometime ago, I discovered something similar but with vegs, particularly cucumbers.
I had inspected a cucumber and didn't find anything unusual or any parasites. I put it in a vinegar water solution to soak. After 10 mins I saw a couple of long white stringy things in the water when I pour it out. I found this rather curious and did this a few more times with other cucumbers, same occurrance! I concluded that although I couldn't see any
parasites on the cucumbers, long worms exists on them. As a protective measure they are probably clear looking, camouflaging themselves on the vegs, but when dead they appear milky white in color.

Very good observation, IF indeed they're worms [and I'm quite certain that they may be]. One thing I know about these "structures" is that MOST of them(?) seem "invisible" or VERY hard to see. That's where staining comes in, as it can be learned from the experiment.
