Well, that did sound harsh :-))) But I think messages like that one from Mike are absolutely must from time to time and shouldn’t be taken personally. What is happening on this forum just reflexes what is really driving people to undertake diet, fasting, etc... In our society the look is very important, that's why people go to gym, taking crazy Atkins’ diet and eventually fasting. I still think what's happening here is great, I mean many people come here for quick fix and instead find that fasting is not just about weight. I believe many have learnt a lot from each other's experience, and whatever force is making people fast everyone should feel welcome here. What I am trying to say it is totally OK to fast for any goal, however crazy it is: health, weight loss, or maybe even world peace, it is forum and anyone entitled to their own opinion. And the fast is only a tool, what you do with it is totally up to you.
As for the safety of the fast here I agree with Mike, whatever is your goal there is a certain way how to do fast and if I were a newbie to fasting I would try to learn as much as I could from other's people experience. I really like Bragg's system, here is why, even if you do a quick research, all these who advocated and followed long fasts(Dr.Sheldon, Dr.Bass...) look at them in their older age, they all were and are profoundly sick. Compared to Bragg (short period fasting system) who had fantastic health even in his 90s. Just one more word, if you really want a safe fast with weight loss only preparation for the long fast like fasting once twice a week plus more fruits and vegetables in your diet can help to get rid of 15-20 lbs during few weeks, just give it a try.
