It's only controlling if your partner views it as such, and I don't see it as abusive at all.

Maybe if the phone calls are a little stifling for the next woman you get involved with, you could try asking the night before what she plans to do the following day. Then you'll have an idea of where she is during the day, and then in the evening you can ask, "How was your day?" That way, you'll never be in the dark, and she'll feel that you take an interest in her, without trying to control her every activity.
