bill wilson and dr. bob smith were co-founders of the AA program... when bill wrote the book he wanted to say "never have we seen a person fail that has thoroughly followed our path"... and i agree... having been a member of AA since 1985 i can say from experience that AA works when all else fails... but AA is not for people that need it... it only works for those that want it... the 3rd tradition: "the only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking"... that "desire" is a very necessary prerequisite... in the beginning AA only dealt with the most low bottom drunks... for it was thought that only the most desperate of cases would ever be willing enough to attempt to work a program that demands rigorous honesty... because the alcoholic is an "extreme case of self-will run riot"...and the truth is that alcoholics are so possessed/obsessed by their addiction that they are incapable of seeing reality as it is... they live a life of denial... alway blaming others... never looking at the real problem... "themselves"... and the insanity of their disease is that they are doomed to doing the same thing... over and over again alway expecting different results... "i'll just have one or two and go home"... yeah... right...
i've been in AA since 1985... and i speak from "experience" when i say AA works 100% of the time for those that want it and are willing to go to any length to get it... because only the most desperate of cases would be willing to follow the simple suggestion of the 12 step program... for who cares to be rigorously honest... who cares to admit their faults to God and another human being... who cares about building character and trust when they could be in the bar having a "nice cool one"...
people like you grog... have preconceived ideas... prejudices... and aren't willing enough to give yourself to such a simple program... so therefore it will never work for you or anyone else that has a mind set such as yours... but you want to know something really cool... as much as you've tried to build a case against AA and run it down... AA will still be there waiting for you when you are desperate enough to reach out for help... AA is not "social services"... nor is it a recruiting agency... and since you know so much about AA maybe you remember hearing the "preamble" that is usually read at the beginning of every meeting which states...
"Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.
There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions.
AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
just one alcoholic to another sharing their experience... strength... and hope... and it works... and speaking from experience... of what i have seen... a person that is truly alcoholic will end up in one of three places...
(1)...a mental/penal institution...
(2)...the grave yard
(3)...or... "Alcoholics Anonymous"... (where they might again join society in a sober productive life)
"one day at a time"...
