Re: booze/drugs mmmm good... AA/NA bad... yuk... phooey...

hey drofinnah,so you`ve been a member of AA since 1985..........I hope you are now one of the councillors/leaders or whatever the terminology is and not one of the members who still needs to attend because they don`t have the confidence in themselves to stay off the booze without AA telling them they don`t need it!
you said yourself you need the desire to come off booze,as I said in a previous post,it is the individual who makes their own decision,it is the individual who chooses not to drink and to keep saying no,the AA can give you support if that is the way you need to go but not everyone needs them and they are not the be all and end all in the ability to give up the booze.
I can speak for myself on this subject,I was an alcoholic for 10+ years, sorry my mistake,I am an alcoholic,I just don`t drink/booze anymore.I am 38yrs of age and january I made the decision enough was enough and I stopped.I didn`t go to AA or seek help elsewhere,it was my decision and to me I had to do it on my own and prove to myself I had the strength, stamina, willpower and pride to do it alone.I have been clean for 6months,I have fought the urge to drink and I have won.I want to stay clean,I hope I can,and I feel sure I will be able to.each day is a new day but now the days are bright and clear and they will stay that way.
so you see we all don`t need AA but they are there for those that do and they are a bit of an institution in society now they will always be around.
my advice is make your own decision to give up booze, once made stick to it,use whatever facilities that are available if you have to,but don`t knock those of us who have successfully abstained and continue to do so on our own.AA is not for all of us.I am a psychiatric nurse and I have numerous patients try to give up with sucess and also with out sucess, both with and without AA or AL-ANON.
MORE POWER TO THOSE WHO WANT TO GET DRY ,WHO STAY DRY AND DON`T PREACH TO OTHERS ABOUT WHAT MUST BE DONE.
it is all personel, only we can do it.this forum is here for us to help and support each other,so lets do it and not slag each other off.grog is entitled to his own opinions but I guess like me he see`s there is a way beyond AA,so why not cut him some slack, after all he has kicked the habit.
