Sorry to hear about your pest predation problems. As I discovered with my 'squerl' problem (suddenly developed a taste for my figs around 3-4 yrs ago) there is almost always a solution. I haven't lost a single fig to them since, & I don't even have to despatch them to that hairy-tailed rat cage in the sky.
The missus wouldn't allow it anyway. Too squeamish. Try some basic on-line research for your own pests, & u might be pleasantly surprised how effective the recommended countermeasures can be. For 'squerls', btw, it's a chili concoction liberally applied to a few well-chosen branches.
They learn fast, and never return after that unpleasant surprise.
