Re: Brain Injury - therapies and solutions

HERBS

Try anything which claims to improve memory (check first with your Doctor or Pharmacist if you are taking other medications).

Herbs e.g. Ginkgo biloba, brahmi (these two herbs thin the blood, and so, apparently, they are not safe to take if you are already taking blood-thinning medications)

Blackmore’s Ginkgo Brahmi:

I took this for a while. It gave a subtle improvement in my brain injury symptoms. After a while, it seemed to make me feel a bit unwell; the improvement plateaued. So I stopped taking it.

Ginkgo biloba and brahmi are definitely worth trying, if you have a TBI, so long as they don't clash with any other things you're taking.

OXYGEN THERAPY

For a while, I was seeing a GP who permitted me to be connected to the oxygen tank in the rear room of the clinic.

I would sit and read a newspaper, with oxygen mask on my face, breathing normally. The mask had a tube connected to the oxygen tank. The doctor set the tank/flow to 30, I think. Not exactly sure of the measurements.

The first time I did this treatment -- I asked the doctor if I could do it -- I sat there inhaling the strong oxygen for more than an hour and a half.

Immediately after that first treatment, I met an old friend for coffee. She asked me where I had been that day; she said that she had watched me as I approached the cafe; that I had bounded down the street, full of life, with so much life in my eyes, with perfect co-ordination, that it was just like I used to be, before my accident, before my brain injury.

I have asked several medical professionals if oxygen would help improve my Traumatic Brain Injury. Every one of them said no, that maybe if I had had oxygen at the time of my accident, it might have helped, but that, months or years after the injury, there was no point taking oxygen; that it wouldn't do anything at all to improve the brain injury.

This is patent nonsense.

I believe people who have permanent brain injuries should be given regular medical appointments where they are connected to an oxygen tank and can actually get a decent burst of oxygen to the brain.

After a Traumatic Brain Injury, parts of the brain are not connecting and flowing like they used to -- those parts of the brain need oxygen! Well, that's my opinion, anyway.

Time needed for each treatment:

I found that I needed at least 90 minutes of sitting breathing the oxygen from the tank, to notice some good benefits.

Ideally, I'd have liked to do a morning session for two hours, then have a break, then do an afternoon session for two hours.

That would make a big difference, I believe, to many people who have brain injuries.
