Thanks for your response and thoughts on this. I agree with some of what you said and disagree with some of what you said.
I'll just comment a bit more on this part:
'Darkness is real! Satan is real! Sin is real! And suffering is real! These things are not figments of our imagination.
But yes, Christ is the light, and he has overcome all these things. That's where the hope lies! Not in pretending these things aren't real.'
In some sense darkness, sin, suffering, and Satan are real, but in another sense, when we abide in Christ they cease to be real for that individual that abides in Christ. Not just in the life to come but also in this life. It has nothing to do with pretending that these things are not real, it has to do with understanding the exact reality of the situation. And until we can experience the reality of the situation, we have faith.
