Re: Week 5 of Fuhrman diet. A bit disappointed...
Thank you NH,
the question of what is the ideal diet for man has been debated for what seems to be eons, so some have the stance as a fruitarian as you do, while others are adamant that you should be omnivorous, while others are vegan, vegetarian and so on and so on.
Of course anyone has the right to choose their own way of eating, so for example
Shelton practiced the "lacto-vegetarian" diet for decades, but this resulted in his development of Parkinsons disease towards the end of his life. Fuhrman squared this with a deficiency of DHA obtained mostly from oily fish, and he had evidence to back this claim.
Shelton would have eaten sources of ALA such as flaxseeds, but in what quantities no one knows for sure, but ALA from these sources is not converted that well by the body into DHA, and the possible cause of his demise, along with his grueling work schedule spanning many decades.
Grassman is probably being a bit over-zealous in his replies to your own, but I am past the point of being too defensive about my own experiences with diet, as this can be enervating and wasteful of life-energy with the opinion-friction that ensues.
Personally, and what works well for me, is a mostly plant-based diet (plus some wild caught fish and organically-raised chicken) that is 80% raw and 20% steam cooked: not sure about any of you, but eating raw potatoes and broccoli/cauliflower doesn't seem to be that appealing!!!
I have learnt over the years that conservative steam-cooking breaks down the hardened cellulose within those kinds of foods, and makes them more digestible, without loss of nutritional content. Fuhrman has this to say on the subject....................

Dr Bass of course may well may have been wrong with his opposition of being frugivore, and I am not saying this is right or wrong either, but only time will tell if this is the ideal diet for you or anyone else in your general health, and the energy needed for coping with the demands of life generally.
Take care.
