Re: Versus killed/raped/hospitalized????
>>"I think most people think this training is about fighting."<<
As you clearly pointed out... it is not. But then the majority of MA schools seem to be pay for the next belt schools and the students never come to realize this - and in many cases are never even introduced to the concept.
Schools that focus on the mental skills of dealing with one's ego, emotions, and the conflict at hand, promote when the student is ready... this includes the student's mental progress in being able to deal with their own egos and emotions, including any negative emotional responses - both being their internal enemies.
A well trained martial artist knows how to use the other's ego and emotional responses against their opponent.
I have witnessed individuals defeated by themselves over and over again... it is always their own ego and the resulting emotional response that defeats them.
When they lose control on the mat... they go down.
But then in a controlled training environment is where you would want to find this out about yourself... not in a real life and death scenario.
We tend to focus on this type of mental training and conditioning in our school.
And at times unfortunately, these students leave training - mostly males (gee, I wonder why? - ego)... humiliated and embarrassed by their lack of self control.
The student's who accepts their response as inappropriate, and sees it for what it is, and are humbled (mostly women)... go on in many cases to become some of our best students - and teachers.
