Not panicking takes training for many...especially if they have a *fear* of these things, or have already been a victim in the past.

My point with an earlier post that a good MA or self defense school will spend a good deal of time (I believe it to be as much as 95% of the training) on being able to overcome your ego and fear in order to be able to clearly think through the situation at hand no matter how dire.
