My question is, did he have health insurance? Tom was in a car accident a few years ago a month before his insurance was to kick in. Same deal -- $8,000 later, he was just a little banged up.
We found out that if he had been insured, the bill would have been under $4000 because the providers have a deal with the insurance company. The poor really do pay more for insurance (and, studies have shown that people without insurance get treated more poorly than those with, pain gets taken less seriously, etc. -- so you pay more for less in the end). Makes you realize what a racket it is, and that actually you might be better off without insurance -- I think some doctors just keep sending you to screenings and other doctors assuming that insurance will cover it -- or, that was my experience around migraines.
