this discussion needs some term defining to be effective. yes, perception plays a role.

anger is a defense mechanism against feeling hurt feelings. the correct response is sadness, but that is seen as being weak, so anger is exhibited. the problem is that anger in response to aggressive behavior creates fear in the aggressor. that fear creates holistility which results in more aggressive behavior.

the problem that most people run into is that hostility and anger, though they have different internal basis, are indistinguishable externally. the hostile person is fearful. the angry person has hurt feelings. look for one of the two in any situation and you can usually tell which is which.

also, as you can see, the two together set up an escalating feedback loop. if one or the other responds with the truth("i am fearful" or "my feelings are hurt"), the loop is stopped and the situation ceases to escalate.
