Things I've learned....

It's taken me a while to post this, because I've been feeling so guilty. I made it to Day 20, and then I broke my fast. I developed a severe urinary tract infection, and the antibiotics were killing me on an empty stomach. My intention was to take the medication with half an apple or some such twice a day, but it turns out to be really hard to only partially break a fast... at least for me. But now that I've had some time to reflect and to analyze, I'm pretty happy with what I've accomplished. First, I lost 2 sizes. Yay! I did get into those jeans, but about 3 days after breaking. And I've also learned enough about my body to actually be able to tell the difference between hungry and not hungry. I don't eat three meals plus a dozen snacks anymore. I eat frequently through the day, but I choose wisely and never eat more than an amount equal to a handful. I eat more often, but I eat a lot less. The most surprising difference is the fact that I came through as a vegetarian. Not by conscious decision, but by what feels like just a natural choice for me. I find that I prefer the flavor and texture of veggies and tofu over chicken and beef. So, believe it or not, I haven't gained an ounce since breaking my fast. In fact, I've lost another couple of pounds. I have completely kicked caffeine, artificial flavors/colors, sodas of all sorts, and the stimulants/depressants cycle I was on. I feel good, my skin looks awesome, and I plan on making fasting a regular part of my lifestyle from now on. I went into it with the intention of losing weight and detoxing, but there have been some great psychological benefits I want to retain. I think I set my sights a little too ambitiously for a girl who had never fasted more than a week before. In about a month (30 days from the date I broke... I have to figure it out), I will do a more reasonable 2-week fast and work my way up. I can do 2 weeks without breaking a sweat. :)

BTW- developing the small meal habit is way easier after a fast. My stomach shrunk pretty significantly, so a handful now fills me up the way a whole plateful couldn't in the past.
