Re: Hope for Curing Eczema? (new to board)
Welcome to the message board,
There is a very real hope for you in your healing and fight against the disease of excema; however if you are continuing to use steroid medications, then your fight becomes counter productive. The steroid medications suppress your immune system and because the immune system is your bodies defense mechanism against harmful toxins (allergens), then logic gives you the understanding as to why your body can't fight the excema. Therefore the reason that the dermatologist can tell you that the excema will never go away is not because it's true, it's because your dermatologist along with your allergist are prescribing you with the steroid medications to insure that the excema will not go away.
The general public assumes that years of medical school has produced excellence in the medical field and that their training has given them more knowledge than we, in the general public, posses regarding medicine and health. This should be true; however in the case of excema, it is not. It's alright to respect the doctors, but don't abandon your common sense wisdom when you hear them speak. If it's not logical, question it. If the answer isn't sufficient, then begin your own research because your health is important. The same speech that your dermatologist gave you was given to my family; yet we did not accept that answer, became pro-active towards our healing, and have found healing from excema. Yes, you can win the fight; but not with steroid medications.
To successfully fight excema, these three areas need to be attacked: internal, external, and forein. In other words; build up your immune system, moisturize the skin with non-steroid creams or lotions, and identify the allergens. A weak and suppressed immune system has left you defenseless against toxins to the body; therefore you need to build it back up, so that it can fight. In excema sufferers, the skin is severely dehydrated and the moisture barrier (skin's defense against harmful irritants) is depleted; thus making you vulnerable to attack from foreign irritants. DRINK MORE WATER. If your dermatologist doesn't even mention the need to drink water for dehydrated skin, then his or her knowledge should become suspect to you. Identifying the allergens is important in the process, because you need to rid yourself of the irritant that is invading your system and causing the excema breakout. Understanding and applying this wisdom is key to your success in beating excema, and can most definitely be achieved.
My niece suffered a severe (total body) excema breakout at 3 months old (worsened by a steroid lotion). My family took the pro-active step of addressing the need of the skin, rather than the excema. We purchased Burt's Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Lotion from our local health food store and in TWO WEEKS my niece was completely healed. She is now 2 years old, still uses the natural lotion as a daily moisturizer, and remains excema free. Treating the symptom, brings temporary relief; however, treating the need of the skin brought healing.
Excema is not a mystery that needs solving; it's just common sense wisdom that needs to be applied. Build up the immune system and it will fight; suppress the immune system and it won't fight. You will find all kinds of advice regarding alternatives to steroid treatment on this site. Trust your instincts and listen to your common sense wisdom when applying what you have learned. You don't have to suffer with excema all of your life; you can defeat it today.
