Re: Extreme flatulence triggered by anxiety.Help!!
Hello, Nehishirke. Sorry to hear of your situation. I noted a few things from your post:
"I always had strong stomach cramps." This sounds like possible IBS, in case this had never been suggested to you before. I believe that gastrointestinal pains are one of the primary (and mandatory) symptoms of IBS per the Rome Criteria (first link below).
"...hoping this is a case of small bowel bacterial overgrowth." You might take a SIBO test. I just did last month, and came back negative. But 2/3rds-3/4ths of folks with IBS come up positive, per studies. First link below.
"I'm personally going to try a self administered
Antibiotic therapy..." I won't personally suggest doing same, but will state that Ceftin (cefuroximine) and Augmentin (amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate combination) had at least good short term results for my gas symptoms. After first thoroughly researching common gastrointestinal
Antibiotics for bacterial infections on the Net, I got mine without prescription through quick trips to Tijuana, Mexico (I live in So Cal).
"...as if I was unknowingly passing gas constantly." If so, then this isn't stress-related, but a constant condition. If not IBS, then a bacterial imbalance of some sort possibly since the gas has to come from somewhere -- most likely undesirable bacteria (as opposed to acidophilus and bifidus) or an infection such as giardia (which can cause gas). If nothing else, this has confirmed for me that my gas issue is bacterial in nature.
"Stool Tests (I suspect they were performed poorly as the lab had a bad reputation)." Both Great Plains Lab and Great Smokies Lab are reputable gastrointestinal labs, although even the best labs simply can't always find everything that's there unfortunately. The gut has an incredibly rich and complex flora. Links below.
If you score high on the Rome Criteria, you might want to check out the IBS books at the bood store. Best wishes on your successful treatment, Nehishirke.
