Old customs are hard to understand in comparison to modern times but ususally a long standing successful society or cultures customs are the oil that makes life run smoothly! And I think the point missed as far as coverings goes is that the women do this out of respect for their men, fathers, uncles, brothers, sons and for the customs that make for a well structured society!
