Re: Is This Islam?
This is what concerns me about Islam -- that, like Christianity before it, the beliefs of the religion would tend to be enforced on everyone anywhere the religion becomes a majority. I believe in the freedom of a person to make his own choices for himself without a government or priesthood meting out punishment for those choices.
I don't, therefore, have any moral issues with women being uncovered. To me, the Islamic tradition that women have to be covered up completely so as not to tempt men is a pretty sad statement about Islamic men. A bit of visible flesh gives the Islamic man license to rape or something? Sheesh. Back to blaming women for all of man's ills, I guess.
Beyond that, we know that the skin of humans actually has a function which requires exposure to direct sunlight to activate. Covering up women prevents this life function from occurring. Or was the production of vitamin D in the skin in the presence of sunlight an accident the creator made?
Again, it looks to me like some good ideas got turned into yet another dogma to give us Islam.
If hands are to be cut off, may Allah do the cutting.
