Well I know that the jews were literal about many things and may not have always searched for the deeper meaning of why God wanted them to do it. Such as the wearing of phylacteries. But I do believe God wanted them to literally wear such worship apparel as a symbol. That symbol should had been a reminder that they should love God and His commandments. For the box on the forehead, represented what they should think or meditate on and the hand should represent what they do. Can we say that none of them understood this? We know many of them didn't because there was scripture that spoke out against them doing it for show or to be seen.

The same could be said about a modern day person who takes communion, and possibly not giving any thought as to why they were doing it either. We literally take communion, just like the Jews literally wore the phylacteries...but as Christians we hopefully understand the deeper meaning of why we do it.

Did literal study of their scriptures cause the problem of them not recognizing their Messiah? I'm not so sure it did. For their Messiah did literally come and He could have been their King, but in a different way than they expected. Isn't it more that they wanted what they wanted, and they wanted it now? They basically made scripture say what they wanted it to say?

I guess I could also use the example of the NAR group that vektek was talking about, wanting to take charge and make things happen to fit what they want scripture to say is going to happen.
