The pearl of wisdom that you impart is a good one -- if you want an honest answer, look in the agricultural community (vets, farmers, etc.). They are realistic about this thing because animals and crops mean big money -- effective diagnoses and treatments might be found there.

For example -- I used the plants in my yard to help me identify the insects I was seeing - which led me to more info about possible vectors and pathogens.

Also, my horse has persistent lesions on his legs that are known as "grease heel" or "scratches" by horse-folk.

I'm saving up to get the vet out to look at them and I know he'll do a skin scraping. I'll likely get a diagnosis and treatment recommendations, which I can then apply to myself if I choose.

I'm suspecting pythiosis, but we all know it's more complicated than that. BUT at least I'll have a consult with a Doctor (DVM) who's willing to look at the disease rationally. (I have good reason to believe that I have the same thing, or similar, to my horse).
