#1 If this problem is short term, you may have simply injured your belly button. Keep it disinfected 3 x's daily and dry.
#2 If this problem has persisted for weeks with a foul smell and maybe blood and puss, you may have a bacterial or fungal infection. Try over the counter anti bacterial or anti fungi creams initially. That should clear it up. If it doesn't, see your doctor. They may prescribe you oral
Antibiotics as well to clear the infection.
#3 If you've noticed this problem is long term, 7 to 10 years or longer, and a persistant foul stinch, occasional or intermittent puss and/or bleeding, this may be:
Occasionally, rarely, a small cyst or duct (opening) that extends into the abdominal wall from the belly button may be present and can actually be quite serious. This is called a Urachal Remnant and is a left-over from fetal (in utero) life. It can at times cause bleeding, a persistent foul smell with either a creamy texture [that's smells so bad that it's actually difficult to wash the stench of your finger] or a slick, clear or yellow puss feel and may need observation or surgery. As always, the diagnosis and the management of your specific condition will require a physical examination by your personal physician. Scheduling an office visit with your primary care doctors is highly recommended for all scenarios especially the third.
