Good for you for supporting your local economy and family owned farm! If you can get out of the grocery store all together that's the way to go. I have backyard chickens that rule the yard (not cooped) and their eggs are bright orange and delicious. You can eat them sunny side up without worry that you'll get a "salmonella bomb."
I've also found that many varieties of greens will grow all winter in some climates, some herbs too. I plant a spring garden and a fall garden.
